AWHONN Intermediate AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Course Description
The AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course is a 1-day instructor-led course focuses on the application of essential fetal heart rate monitoring knowledge and skills used in the intrapartum clinical setting. The course consists of didactic content, hands-on skill stations and an online integration test.
Online prerequisite education is required before attending the 1-day instructor-led course. The entire course is presented in a standardized format and can be used as an educational assessment to validate the knowledge and skills of experienced perinatal clinicians. Course completion does not award certification. Participants who attend the entire course (on-line and instructor-led course) receive 11.5 nursing contact hours. For successfully completion of the course, participants must complete the on-line education, attend the instructor-led portion of the course, and complete the skill stations and online knowledge integration test (with a score of ≥80%).
The skill stations focus on demonstration, practice, and testing of the following:
- Performing Leopold’s maneuvers
- Placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and fetal spiral electrode
- Interpretation of tracings
- Identification of indicated clinical interventions
- Mandatory online knowledge integration test
The Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course is not an introductory-level fetal monitoring course, but builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced registered nurses and physicians. It is designed for registered nurses and physicians who have previously completed a basic or foundations fetal heart monitoring (FHM) course and who utilize FHM in the intrapartum setting.
